Amazone was established in 1995 as a non-profit making organisation on the initiative of the Minister of Equal Opportunities at the time, Miet Smet. Amazone still receives a significant subsidy of the federal Institute for the Equality of Women and Men. A belief in the wealth of diversity, openness to constructive cooperation, and permanent attention for the quality of life and work are the common themes which characterise Amazone's activities in its tasks:
- flexible and good quality support for women's organizations and NGOs which work on equality for men and women: e.g., in housing, the conference and meeting structure, the support for studying and lobbying, management support;
- providing access and the dissemination of information and documentation on women's emancipation and the women's movement. The documentation centre focuses on current policy information.
- the exchange of knowledge and experience, cooperation for activities and projects on equality, equal opportunities, gender and mainstreaming.
