Gender, representation and human rights has been in focus for Edström during many years. Together with some colleagues she started a media watch group “Everything is Possible” in 1992. The network is still active and takes a part in collecting data for the Global Media Monitoring Project.
Edström is also involved in ethical issues and the question of freedom of expression. During nine years she was a board member of the Swedish Broadcasting Commission, a national authority that oversees radio and television broadcasts (2007-2015).
Edström served as was a regional coordinator (2009-2011) in the world wide-study “Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media” organised by International Women’s Media Foundation, IWMF.
During 2011-2012 Edstrom served as a research officer at The Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research and during 2012 -2014 she worked as a research officer at Nordicom, a knowledge centre for media & communication research, and was in charge of the Nordic Gender & Media Forum.
Maria Edström is currently involved in AgeCap, Center for Ageing and health, where she has a a special focus on gendered ageism.
She is part of the EU-funded project AGEMI - advancing gender equality in the media (2017-2019) and in the research project Comparing gender and media equality across the globe: a cross-national study of the qualities, causes and consequences of gender equality in and through the news media. Project leader Monika Djerf- Pierre, professor in Media - and Communication research (2015-2019).
