I have always been interested in gender issues - especially how those bias have been reinforced and perpetuated by literature and social media.
My bachelor's thesis focused on the representation of the Middle Est in women's travel writing during the 18th and 19th century. In my dissertation, I demonstrated that female travel writing was important in deconstructing the stereotyped depiction of harems gave by male writers. Harems, in fact, were not homes to immoral and promiscuous women, but safe and domestic places for Muslim women.
My master's thesis focused on the representation of immigrant women in the Italian and Spanish press. Through a linguistic analysis, I evidenced that those women were described either as victims or as negative characters. Instead of examining the power relations those women were facing, the newspapers analyzed repeated old bias.
