Post

For the independent ‘Abuse, Harassment and Exploitation in Today's Academia’ project led by Erman Örsan Yetiş, PhD. and Poyraz Kolluoğlu, PhD., we are looking for participants who are willing to share their experiences and thoughts in the higher education sector.

The ‘Abuse, Harassment and Exploitation in Today's Academia’ project aims to reveal and underline the forms of abuse and harassment present in the current, neoliberal academia. With the participation of PhD and post-doctoral researchers, it aims to make the precarity experienced by early career researchers visible. The project's purpose is to understand how early career researchers both take part in and be affected by the current academic system that produces abuse, harassment and exploitation. These issues cannot be considered gender-neutral and they inevitably present themselves as gender-based. Hence, this study adopts a gender-sensitive approach.

We are looking for stories that outline the experiences of researchers

  1. Either, currently a PhD or postdoctoral researcher who are experiencing any form of abuse, harassment and exploitation,
  2. Or, has advanced further in academia but want to share any form of abuse, harassment and exploitation they experienced during their PhD or postdoctoral positions.

To clarify, you do not have to hold an academic position currently. These stories can be your past experiences when you were in academia.

Keeping in mind the sensitive nature of this study, we will collect the narratives through email interviews, and we will not reveal any personal information. The purpose of the project is not to identify problematic individuals, disciplines or universities, but rather to reveal the prevalent organizational culture enabling these circumstances.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please email us at ahe.in.academia@gmail.com. The deadline for contacting us with an interest to participate is the 30th of September. 2020. From this day forward, we will contact you to arrange interviews.
